Biography

About Deanna

Deanna grew up in central California in a town where very few students attend a four- year university. She earned her Bachelor’s degree at UCLA and her Master’s degree at the University of San Diego. She began her career at a prestigious private high school in the College Counseling office. She eventually moved on to a public high school because she wanted to touch the lives of more students. At her current school, she has served as Department Chairperson of Guidance & Counseling for 18 years. In her current position, she is helping students through every step of the college process, including course selection, application workshops, and financial aid. She has had her own college consulting business as well as taught College & Career Success courses at the community college level. She also served on the San Diego National College Fair committee for many years, helped write guidance standards for the San Diego County Office of Education and is a reader for the UCLA Alumni Scholarship program.
She enjoys spending her free time doing activities with her family, reading and hiking.

Philosophy

I have always had a passion for working with teenagers. I truly relish seeing the transformation and maturity as they enter their next phase of life. I enjoy meeting with them to discuss their interests regarding majors, careers, and college goals. My college counseling philosophy is to help students find the college which best matches their academic goals, personality, and lifestyle. I will break down the overwhelming process into manageable pieces so families and students have a clear idea of what to do without getting overwhelmed. Former students describe me as accessible, approachable, and patient.

Testimonial

“I knew very little about the college application process. While my parents served as unwavering cheerleaders, their ability to guide me through the daunting and non-intuitive process of applying to college—FAFSA and all. Recognizing this common limitation of the students she serves, Deanna made my journey to college a seamless one. We met frequently, discussing my dreams and aspirations. She reviewed my essays, relentlessly and with incredibly helpful feedback. And she wrote a letter of recommendation that I still re-read to this day. In addition to college guidance, Deanna provides exceptional support to ensure that her students achieve academic success in high school. She frequently advised my class choices, raising questions I would’ve never considered, while guiding me towards tests like the ACT and PSAT that I wouldn’t have taken otherwise. And she did it all with a smile on her face. I cannot emphasize Deanna’s accessibility, warmth and ability to connect with students enough.”

– Daimen (Stanford, Class of 2017)

“Mrs. Goldberg catered to all of her students , it didn’t matter if you were a straight A student or a struggling student; she took the time to understand your background and who you were outside of the academic world. I come from a low income family with two deaf parents and she went out of her way to accommodate us in a way that I felt comfortable to seek life and academic guidance from her. Mrs. Goldberg is culturally agile, empathetic, determined, energetic and everything a student can ask for in a counselor. I can literally say I would not be at the place I am now, if it wasn’t for Mrs. Goldberg instilling a vision in me that I didn’t even know I had.”

–Sewit (UCLA, Class of 2021)

“Mrs. Goldberg helped me reach my lifelong goal; college. As an immigrant and a first generation student, college itself seemed like a dream. Nonetheless, Mrs. Goldberg supported me by giving me the necessary courses and resources, helping me with the application, personal statement, financial aid, and the DACA process. Even to this day, as a college student, Goldberg continues to help me when necessary, and her support has helped in my time at UC Berkeley. She is truly a counselor that will go above and beyond expectations, care for students, and have a deep impact in their college and personal life.”

–Oscar (UC Berkeley, Class of 2019)

“I also really want to say thank you for helping me so much throughout the years. I really appreciate it. I had no idea of anything about college until I bugged you every single day. You're the reason why I got into college, made it through the homelessness, and also why got $22,000 in financial aid! I can't say thank you enough!”

–Devon (CSUN, Class of 2021)
