About Porsha

As an educator and counselor for many years, I have had the pleasure of working alongside some of the most knowledgeable professionals in our field. To date, I have combined theory and practice in order to effectively serve students from various communities. As a result, it is my goal to continue working as an advocate for students, in order to assist them in realizing their academic potential and higher education opportunities.

I spent my first three years at an all-girl Private Catholic High School. I currently serve as a College Counselor at one of the most successful Charter High Schools in Los Angeles, California. I pride myself on the positive relationships that I have been able to develop with my students in order to assist them with the entire college admissions process. My service as a counselor allowed me to guide students through the college process and earn admissions into the top universities including Brown, all of the UC’s and Cal States, Grinnell, University of Wisconsin -Madison, and many other four year institutions. When I am not assisting students, I enjoy spending time with family, playing musical instruments and working out.

My perception and philosophy of counseling comes from my own life experiences. Counselors provide a supportive environment in which students can identify salient information or skills to help enable them to navigate challenges both academic and personal. As a high school counselor working with young people who face challenges like self-discovery and peer acceptance, it is critical to gain the confidence of this population through personal interaction and demonstrating professional competence. In my current job, I have honed these skills because I have been asked to work with a highly needy, specialized group of students, while maintaining other counseling and academic advising responsibilities. In the end, counseling requires the ability to identify the needs of the students and the parameters of the job, with the ultimate goal of helping students find academic and personal success.

Counseling services received by Ms. Boyd in relation to academics, financial aid, and the college going process showed how prepared and well informed she is on the subjects. Also, based on services I received, I found Ms. Boyd to be helpful in making sure one would stay on top of their academics, especially when college applications were well underway. She provided one on one meetings and workshops on how to understand the college application process.
