About Katie

I started my College Admission Counseling career as a student worker, in the Admission Office at North Dakota State University. I didn’t know I was about to start a long and fulfilling career. I enjoyed 9 years working as a College Admission professional, traveling, reading applications and essays, and awarding millions of dollars in scholarships from various committees at two medium sized public universities. My summer in Kuwait as graduate intern at The American University of Kuwait, helped me find my love of working with international students and families. After 9 years of admission trade, I wanted to spend more time with individual students and their families while not being tied to one particular college, which led to my current work as the Director of College Counseling at a private college preparatory school. Working in my 5th year as the Director of College Counseling, I love developing and implementing the college counseling curriculum and working individually with students, their parents, and family members, as they navigate the college admission process. The relationships with these students and parents are the highlight of my work.

Communication and clear expectations are key. I am a relational, student centered, holistic counselor. Fact and information gathering is essential to this process. Helping students know what questions to ask and where to find the information they need to assess each college and university is a great place to start. I ask questions to help students understand what they are truly looking for, and what is important to them. Using my experience in many different areas we work together to find not only the best fit in a college and university, but also, to present the best application possible to these schools.

Ms. Mitchell always went above and beyond to make sure that I was prepared to get accepted into my tops schools, which happened! She was always there for me when I needed any help with anything related to college, the admissions process, or just any life advice/help in general. I will always be grateful for everything Ms. Mitchell has done for me and I look forward to the future she has helped me create.
