Biography

About Avina

As a first generation college student, I am very passionate about helping families navigate the college process, especially for families who have little to no experience with university admissions. I have helped many of my former students gain admission to the UC and CSU systems as well as private schools and HBCU’s. I specialize in helping my students find and secure scholarships that are available to them, many of my students have been awarded multiple scholarships, notably the Gates Millenium Scholarship. As a former student athlete and current athletics counselor of my High School, I am able to help student athletes prepare and design a four-year plan to meet the guidelines to attend a four-year university, and many of my former student athletes have received Division One admissions and scholarships. When I am not at work, I can be found spending time with my wife, daughter, and twin boys. My daughter and I train Jiu Jitsu 3 nights a week.

As a School Counselor, my students' and families' best interest is placed first and foremost. Every day is met with a smile, a handshake or a hug and a piece of who I am. My counseling/coaching style has always been direct--be real and be honest. My effort will match your effort, so if you give me 100% then I will match your 100%. My path is to help you fulfill your goals and walk alongside you in this journey of post-secondary planning.

Testimonial

“During the past three years I’ve had Mr. Avina as a counselor, he has supported me countless times and has taught me so much. Since my sophomore year, he helped me prepare for my academics with a four-year plan. That four-year plan was essential as it allowed me to think about the classes I would plan to take in high school while keeping track of the grades I received in those classes. The following year, Mr. Avina would make sure that we had the four-year plan up to date and would continue doing so. With the four-year plan almost irrelevant during my senior year, Mr. Avina also made sure we had plans prepared for after high school. Regardless if students chose to pursue higher education, work, or the military. He also helped his students with filling out forms for FAFSA and the DREAM ACT. I vividly remember every single piece of advice he has given me regarding college because I’ve noticed that think about my every action before I act on it. Mr. Aviña has influenced me into not only becoming a better student, but also a better person. As the first child in my family to attend college in the US, I’ve followed Mr. Aviña’s advice to the tee. From studying to networking, and balancing every aspect, my freshman year of college went very smoothly. If it weren’t for his ongoing guidance throughout and after high school, I wouldn’t be as successful as I am today. And for that, I am so thankful to have somebody as invested and as caring as Mr. Aviña to be my high school counselor.”

“Mr. Avina was my high school counselor for the entire four years that I had attended PSHS. He had guided me through my academics by helping me choose the right classes and by challenging me to take on more AP and dual-enrollment classes since he believed in my potential to handle numerous at a time. His supportive and caring nature is evident in the way he dedicates his time and efforts and is always present for his students - making him the best possible Head Counselor. With his guidance, I was able to successfully graduate as Valedictorian and more importantly, as a young individual who’s ready to take on my future goals at UC Irvine. Having Mr. Avina as my counselor is truly something I’m grateful for to this day. ”

– Colleen V., University of California Irvine, Class of 2022

"Throughout my 4 years of high school, Mr. Aviña has been there as a guide, a mentor, a friend, and even a father figure at times. He makes the effort to get to know each of his students in order to gain a better understanding of their strengths, weaknesses, and general personalities. In addition to helping me with my educational responsibilities, he has also been someone whom I can trust to openly discuss personal issues or factors that hindered my performance in school. Because of the constant positivity, reassurance, and support of Mr. Avina, I was able to excel greatly in high school and feel well-prepared for college as well as other future endeavors."
